Homer is a small town in Alaska where everyone pretty much knows each other. The people of Homer once friendly with each other, now in conflict because of the subject of immigration in the country. What is interesting is that this town has never actually had a problem with immigration. They have never had immigrants legal or illegal in Homer.
Ben was one of the people living in Homer. The difference between him and the others was that he was still trying to make a decision on which side he wants to be on. Ben decided to do his own research only through his computer and his parents' printer. After seeing many articles and different news about immigrants, he came up to his own conclusion that he is opposed immigration. One problem that he encountered during his research time was that he did not know which source to believe. For him a lot of the news he read about were very disturbing and for some he was not sure if they were even partly true.
We should all be cautious when we choose which sources to believe and which not. At the end of Ben's story he finds out that not every news or article he found online was true. That causes for him to change his mind on immigration but unfortunately it is too late. For reasons like these, so we do not end up in the same position like Ben we need to research using good credible sources. To be extra sure we can always research and check the actual sources. One technique we can use to be able to tell if our sources are credible is if they are backed up with actual evidence.
We all should be able to discuss many controversial issues and subjects without being biased. At the end I believe that if you are informed about the subject it is okay to form your own opinion, as long as you present it with respect to others.
The community that I am researching for my paper is Florida State University College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. I am part of this community as an undergraduate student in Criminology. The reason I chose this topic is because not only am I part of it right now but I also want to continue being part of it in the future as a graduate student in this college.
